William Gussler entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 as a selective volunteer. He completed basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, before attending electrician school at the Naval Armory in Detroit, Michigan.    Mr. Gussler was a 3rd class petty officer when he was assigned to the Booth, shortly after her first trip to the Mediterranean. He attained 2nd class before he left the navy at the end of World War II, and re-enlisted 4 1/2 years later at the beginning of the Korean War. He would eventually serve for a total of 20 years as an electrician in the U.S. Navy, specializing in the gyro compass and working on aircraft carriers, APAs, LSDs and destroyers.
