Paul Joseph Hannafey, born in New York City, joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He graduated from flight school in September of 1943. In 1944 he sailed to Great Britain and flew his first combat mission in April, flying the B-24 Liberator. He returned to the States in 1944 as a 1st lieutenant and remained in the military.
