Dr. Robert Solomon applied for a commission while in medical school in December of 1941 and joined the Army in 1942 after completing his residency at Johns Hopkins University. He spent some time training in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and worked in Tennessee for a time. Eventually he was shipped out to the South Pacific from San Francisco, serving as a doctor on a troop transport en route to New Guinea. In New Guinea he worked as a radiologist and physician before being transferred to an evacuation hospital with the 41st division, originally on the island of Mindoro, then in the Philippines. After the surrender of Japan, he served in the occupational army on the island of Kyushu. He returned home ater the war.
