Jack Duffell joined the U.S. Coast
Artillery on January 4, 1940. He attended basic training at Sullivan’s Island
near Charleston, S.C. In April of 1940 he was deployed to the Pacific Theater,
landing at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was assigned to the Hawaiian Seacoast
Artillery Command, 16th Coast Artillery, stationed at Fort Duresi.
Duffell was At Fort Duresi on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl
Harbor.
In 1942 Duffel’s unit became part of the Second Infantry and he was
transferred to the headquarters of the 248th Task Force. In 1944 he
participated in the invasion of the Philippines. He was discharged in 1945.
Duffell reenlisted in 1950 and served with the 9th Air Force.
