While a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill, George
Rogers joined the U.S. Navy’s B12 Officer Training Program. In the summer of
1944, he attended midshipman school at Columbia University. He was commissioned
in October of that year at the Cathedral St. John the Divine. He then attended
communication school at Harvard in Boston, Mass.
Rogers was deployed to the Pacific in 1945 and
assigned as a transit to the USS Louisville. On the island of Okinawa he was
transferred to the USS Missouri where he remained for the duration of the war.
Rogers was aboard the Missouri on September 2, 1945 and witnessed the Japanese
Surrender Ceremony.
