George Little enlisted in the U.S.
Marine Corps in 1942, and attended boot camp at Paris Island, S.C. He fought in
the Pacific Theater during World War II. Little received a field commission
during the invasion of Saipan, becoming First Lieutenant and Platoon Leader. In
April 8, 1942 he was blinded in battle on the island of Okimawa. In November of
1945, following a series of reconstructive surgeries, he returned home, to
Concord, N.C. where he became the state’s first blind building contractor.
