Ed McGirt joined the U.S. Navy in
the fall of 1939. He completed basic training at Norfolk, Virginia and was
assigned to the 5th Division aboard the USS Arkansas, and sailed for
Calebra Island, Puerto Rico. In 1941 the USS Arkansas was stationed in Iceland
and patrolling the waters of North Atlantic.
In 1942 McGirt was transferred to the USS Denver and deployed to
the Pacific. In June of 1943 he transferred to the USS Ganymede. McGirt
Participated in operations in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea and the
Philippines. He was on the Island of Palawam in the Philippines when the war
came to an end. He was discharged in October of 1945.
