Clifton (Smoke) Wayne was inducted
into the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C on December 19, 1944. He
completed basic training at Camp Blanding, Florida, and was preparing to leave
for Germany when the war in Europe ended. He was transferred to Fort Mead,
Maryland and deployed to the Pacific Theater.
Wayne landed in Manila and was sent to a replacement depot. There
he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, and dispatched to
mountains of Luzon. He was stationed with the 25th at Lingayen Gulf
when Japan surrendered. Wayne joined the occupation forces in Japan, and
remained there until the fall of 1946.
