Elta Lamphier was born in Louisville, Kentucky on October 7, 1913. She married Lieutenant Colonel Richard Lamphier on January 9, 1947. During WWII, she served as a civilian nurse in Panama at the Panama Canal Health Department, Nichols Army Hospital in Louisville, KY and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen, North Carolina.
Her husband had a distinguished thirty-six year career with the U.S. Army. During WWII he served with Admiral Nimitz and as a Quarter Master at Fort de Lessups, Panama. After the war he was stationed in Massachusetts with the U.S. Army Active Reserves. Lt. Col. Lamphier was buried at Arlington with full military honors in 1972.
