Joseph Pollard was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey in February of 1943. He was assigned to the Army Signal Corps, a branch of the Army Air Corps. He completed basic training at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C. and advanced training at Drew Field in Tampa, Florida. While in the Army, Pollard attended RADAR school, Cryptography and Cryptanalysis schools and Clerk school.    Although Pollard was assigned to the Signal Corps, he actually served as a clerk typist in various locations within the United States, including the Continental Air Force Headquarters at Bolling Field in Washington, D.C. He was discharged in 1946, but remained in the Army Reserve, and was recalled to active service in June of 1950. He worked for one year at a Classification, Assignment and Processing Center at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, Alabama.
