Alva Porter enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps
in Boston, Massachusetts on September 26, 1944. She completed basic training at
Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. She received
further training at Amarillo and San Antonio, Texas.
In April of 1945, Porter was deployed to the
European Theater. Her ship landed in Scotland three days after thewar in Europe
ended. She was sent by train to Le Havre, France to join the 490th
Reinforcement Company. She worked with the 490th until December 2,
1945. Porter was a Staff Sergeant when she left the Army. |
