Jack Hart was born in Wilmington, N.C. on April
29, 1915. He attended New Hanover High School, but left school to join the
Civilian Conservation Corps. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1934 and was
discharged in 1936.
Hart reenlisted in October of 1942, joining the Army Air Corps. He
was assigned to a troop carrier group as an aircraft radio operator. In March of
1943, he was deployed to North Africa. He landed in Accra, on the Gold Coast.
From there he flew to Morocco where he was assigned to the 64th Troop
Carrier Group.
In July of 1943 Hart participated in the
invasion of Sicily. In April of 1944, he was deployed with an air echelon of the
64th Troop Carrier Division, to the China- Burma- India Theater of
Operation. He fought alongside Merrill’s Marauders in the battle of Mitkyina.
Hart remained in Burma for a year and four months. He was discharged on November
10, 1945. For his service in the CBI Theater, the Chinese government awarded
Hart a China War Memorial Medal. |
