Bruce Gillie enlisted in the Navy
Air Corps in August of 1942. He trained at Chapel Hill, N.C., Squantum Naval Air
Station in Massachusetts, and Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida. He was
deployed to the Pacific and worked for two months patrolling the waters around
the Marshall Islands. He was transferred to a Black Cat Squadron stationed at
Guadalcanal. Gillie was designated a Patrol Plane Commander, and ran rescue
patrols and bombing missions in the South Pacific until the end of the war. |
