Gene Harrod enlisted in the U.S.
Navy in the early 1940’s. He completed basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois.
He was assigned to a destroyer, the USS Dortch, as a fire control man. Harrod
first engaged in combat in the Marshall Islands. He participated in the
invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. By the time Harrod was discharged, he had
attained the rank of Fire Control Man, First Class. |
