Paul Weiser joined the U.S. Navy on February 14, 1941, and attended basic
training in Newport, Rhode Island. He was assigned to the battleship U.S.S.
North Carolina, and went to sea in the summer of 1942. As a crewman on the USS
North Carolina, Wieser took part in every major naval offensive in the Pacific
theater. They operating off the coast of Japan when the war ended. Wieser
remained in the Navy for year and a half after the war. He later spent three
years in the Naval Reserves and was recalled to active duty during the Korean
War.
In 1961, the USS North Carolina was purchased by the citizens of
North Carolina, and is now moored on the Cape Fear River across from the city of
Wilmington. The Battleship serves as a memorial to those who served in the armed
forces during World War II. Paul Wieser moved to Wilmington in 1983, and worked
for several years as a volunteer educator on the Battleship. |
